TXST's New Academic Standing Policy
TXST's New Academic Standing Policy
TXST's Presidential Commission on Student Success proposed updates to Texas State's Academic Standing Policy to better support each student's journey to graduation. The improved policy took effect on December 1, 2024.
TXST's Academic Standing Designations:
- Good Academic Standing: Students with a TXST GPA of 2.0 or higher will maintain good academic standing. We encourage them to keep up the good work.
- Academic Warning: Students whose TXST GPA drops to 1.99 or below for the first time will receive an academic warning. They must raise their TXST GPA to at least 2.0 to return to good academic standing.
- Academic Probation: If a student's TXST GPA remains at 1.99 or below for a second consecutive semester, they will be placed on academic probation. To return to good academic standing, they must raise their TXST GPA to at least 2.0. Students can remain on Academic Probation by earning a 2.25 or better TXST semester GPA.
- Academic Suspension: Students whose TXST GPA remains at 1.99 or below and who earn a semester GPA of 2.24 or below will face academic suspension and cannot enroll in Texas State coursework for the following durations:
- One semester for the first suspension
- Two calendar years for the second suspension
- Indefinitely for the third or more suspensions
What does all that mean for you, though?
We worked with TXST's expert Academic Advisors to create the following helpful tables.
If you started the Spring 2025 semester in Good Academic Standing:
| @ start of Spring 2025 (January) | @ end of Spring 2025 (May) | New Academic Standing Will Be | What that means entering your next “long” term: |
| Cumulative TXST GPA of 2.0 or higher | Cumulative TXST GPA still 2.0 or higher | Good Academic Standing | Keep up the good work! |
| Cumulative TXST GPA dropped to 1.99 or below | Academic Warning | Raise cumulative TXST GPA to at least 2.0 to return to Good Academic Standing |
If you started the Spring 2025 semester on Academic Warning or Reinstated from Academic Suspension:

| Cumulative TXST GPA of 1.99 or below for the first time | Cumulative TXST GPA raised to 2.0 or higher | Good Academic Standing | Keep up the good work! |
| Cumulative TXST GPA still 1.99 or below (regardless of semester GPA) | Academic Probation | (a) Raise cumulative TXST GPA to at least 2.0 to return to Good Academic Standing, or (b) Earn a semester GPA of at least 2.25 to remain on Academic Probation |
If you started the Spring 2025 on Academic Probation:
| @ start of Spring 2025 (January) | @ end of Spring 2025 (May) | New Academic Standing Will Be | What that means entering your next “long” term: |

I understand how the policy works for Fall and Spring, but what about Summer or intersession terms?
Students won't be placed on Academic Warning, Academic Probation, or Academic Suspension at the conclusion of a summer or intersession term since those academic statuses are only determined at the end of each long (fall or spring) semester.
A student can, however, return to Good Academic Standing, as the result of a summer or intersession term if their cumulative TXST GPA has been raised to at least 2.0 when the term ends.Additionally, students placed on a First Academic Suspension in May still have the opportunity to take summer classes since their suspension won’t take effect until the fall term. If they raise their cumulative TXST GPA to a 2.0 when summer grades are posted in August, they’ll return to Good Academic Standing and can continue with fall coursework.

What about correspondence courses?
If you're already enrolled in a TXST correspondence course when you're placed on Academic Suspension, you can still complete it. If the final grade raises your TXST GPA to 2.0 or higher, you'll be reinstated.
However, you cannot enroll in new correspondence courses while suspended.

What if I took a break from TXST when the previous academic standing terms were in effect?
If you took a break from TXST prior to the new Academic Standing terms taking effect, your academic standing may follow the previous designations. However, they will follow their corresponding updated terms.
If you took a break on Good Standing, see the Good Standing table above.
If you take a break on Academic Probation, see the Academic Warning table above.
If you took a break on Academic Probation Continued, see the Academic Probation table above.
