Become a Peer Mentor

Peer Mentors are upper-level students who provide continued positive peer support to help students transition to Texas State socially and academically.

Peer Mentors will receive a wage of $14.00/hour and may work up to 15 hours a week. We are looking for candidates who can commit to a flexible schedule, as the number of hours each week may vary. You may not hold another on campus job while working as a Peer Mentor.

What would be my responsibilities as a Peer Mentor?

As a Peer Mentor, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Attend assigned US 1100, ELAR 1300, and/or MATH 1300 courses
  • Attend a weekly meeting with the Peer Mentoring team
  • Meet with all assigned students outside of class at least once a semester (you will have around 30 - 60 students, depending on section sizes)
  • Attend 2 hours of Office Hours to complete administrative duties such as logging meeting interactions and submitting weekly timesheets
  • Host 2 - 4 hours of Bobcat Study Hours where you will invite your mentees to join you to promote good study habits
  • Encourage student attendance at academic/social events around Texas State
  • Help students become familiar with university resources and refer them as needed
  • Assist students in interacting with faculty members
  • Participate in training before the start of the semester and throughout the semester as needed

Am I eligible to apply?

You are eligible to apply to be a Peer Mentor if you:

  • Have a minimum 2.75 Texas State GPA (3.00 GPA preferred)
  • Have been enrolled at Texas State for at least one academic year by the time the position begins in August 2025 (typically around 30 credit hours completed by the start date)
  • Have strong interpersonal skills
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Are an active member of the Texas State community
  • Are available to attend New Peer Mentor Training the week before the fall semester starts

Preferred qualifications:

  • Successful completion of US 1100
  • 60+ credit hours completed

Application Timeline

  • Applications open February 10
  • Submit an online application by March 7 at 11:59 p.m. (resume and transcript required)
  • Have at least one full-time Texas State faculty or staff member submit a recommendation form on your behalf
  • We will begin reviewing applications after March 7
  • We will contact you after spring break if you've been selected for an interview
  • If selected, interview
  • Decisions will be emailed by the end of March/early April
